Sustainability

Cornwall is a spectacularly beautiful part of the world, and we want to help keep it that way

More than 500,000 tons of waste coffee grounds ends up in landfill every year.

...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The boxes, tape, bags and the labels that transport your delicious coffee to your grinder hopper are often overlooked.

Here at Cornico Coffee Roasters we are always thinking about our impact on the environment, and this reflects in all our products.

Our coffee bags are bio-degradableand the bag lining is oxo bio-degradable - which means that we will not have bags branded with our logo on a landfill 100 years in the future. The labels on our coffee bags are made from sugarcane and hemp paper which degrades far quicker than plastic labels which will last a lifetime. Hemp is much more efficient than even paper as a hemp stalk can grow in 4 months whereas a tree will take between 20 and 80 years to grow.

The boxes that house your coffee are bio-degradable and we have even thought about the tape we use to seal the boxes; it’s made from cellulose.

We go one step further.

We collect your old coffee grounds when we deliver a new order. We get them dried and compressed into brickets that can be used as an alternative fuel for fireplaces, stoves and potentially something bigger in the future.

Any plastic bags from other products such as our Caffé Carraro range will also be collected, the plastic is sent off to a company that turns used plastic into outdoor furniture.

Recycling waste coffee grounds into Coffee Logs helps to reduce greenhouse gases, reduces waste and gives your flat white a useful second life. Typically, coffee grounds go to landfill where they emit methane, a greenhouse gas 34 times more potent than carbon dioxide. By recycling coffee grounds into Coffee Logs, we generate 80% less emissions than if the grounds are sent to landfill, and we provide a sustainable alternative to coal briquettes and imported wood logs.
